With Oklahoma opening up a can of whoop-ass on Texas Tech and Oklahoma State in consecutive last night the Big 12 standings now look like this.
Oklahoma 11-1 (7-1)
Texas 11-1 (7-1)
Texas Tech 11-1 (6-1)
That leaves with the question of who plays Missouri in the Big 12 Title game?
First, let me state the it should be Texas against Oklahoma in the Big 12 Champioship game. Missouri has no chance against either of these teams. But I digress.
By rule, the BCS standings would determine the winner of the South division. If there were to happen the following logic would have to dictate why the Big 12 BCS spots MUST look like this:
Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech.
Oklahoma beat Texas Tech by a landslide. Texas Tech beat Texas by the slimmest of margins. Both of these wins were at home. More importantly, Texas comfortably beat Oklahoma in a rivalry game on a neutral field. I understand that Oklahoma comfortably beat Oklahoma State on the road last night, but beating Oklahoma on a neutral field is more impressive than beating Oklahoma State on the road.
Logic dictate that the voters would have to give Texas the edge of Oklahoma.
If the sports writers and coaches follow simple logic, Texas should be playing Missouri in the Big 12 title game. Texas should win and go to the national title game against the SEC Champion.
I agree, but from what I can tell by watching the sports commentators yesterday, OU is now the sexy team. They all seem to have a short attention span.
I’m anxiously awaiting the news…Hook ‘Em Horns!
That’s the big problem with college football. You can have a loss, as long as it’s early in the season. Look at OU (who lost to a quality team on a neutral field) and look at Florida (who lost to an unranked opponent at home).
Teams like Penn State (losing at Iowa, a decent team, at the last second) and Texas (losing at Texas Tech in the last minute) get penalized for having lost later in the season.
I should be UT against OU but since we have to paly by the rules, make it UT v. Mizzou.
Good luck today. I hope logic prevails.
I disagree. Not only with the “logic” comment, but also with Laura’s comment about the sports commentators favoring OU. I have seen commentator after commentator make a pitch for Texas to be in the Big 12 Championship. Kirk Herbstreit and Lee Corso were pitching Texas yesterday while onsite for the OU/OSU game. On Friday, during breaks on the ABC broadcast of the Colorado/Nebraska game, John Saunders and Doug Flutie were pitching Texas. Just this morning on ESPN I had to listen to Stephen A. Smith (who is a complete idiot) cry about how unfair it is to Texas and that the Longhorns should be in the game. He went on and on about how OU doesn’t have a defense, saying “Can they stop anybody? Hello?” Are you kidding me? They were more than able to stop a very prolific Texas Tech offense that Texas couldn’t stop!
What they all seem to be forgetting is that there is a 3-way tie in the Big12 south. Like it or not, Tech has only one loss as well. You can’t keep Tech out of it just because of the 44 point loss to OU. You can’t say Texas beat OU head-to-head, so they should go to the championship. Using that logic, Tech should go…they beat Texas. No, wait….OU should go, they beat Tech. Wait!!! Texas should go because they beat OU! It’s an argument that can’tbe won, regardless of the team for which you argue. The fact of the matter is that THREE teams are tied for the lead in the Big12 south. Unfortunately, in this situation, the tie breaker can’t satisfy everyone. I’m not saying UT isn’t deserving, sure they are. But so is OU. And I would like to see the national commentators acknowledge that. If the BCS computers jump OU, there’s nothing anyone can do about that. What they should be talking about is how the decision will be made by the human polls. The decision will be made by humans deciding which team they believe to be better than the other, which, if you remember, is how the national championship used to be decided. Let the voters decide which team they think is best.
Your points for the most part are valid, but you can’t consider Tech.
A national championship contender doesn’t escape the Baylor game with a victory, especially when th other two teams blew them out.
I think everyone agrees they are the third best of all the teams.
