Sorry I haven’t posted in a while. The ice storm in the Northeast left me powerless until late Wednesday night. Luckily I made my ESPN picks that week to the tune of a despicable 8 – 8. It was a good week to pick poorly because none of you could see the picks. (Losses were Tampa, Washington, KC, GB, Tennessee, Arizona, Baltimore, NYG) My record for the year is now 141 – 82 – 1.

I’m looking forward to these games, including Indy (I did pick them to win). With playoff spots on the line, this week’s games will be very competitive and hard to pick.

Let’s go.

Dallas Cowboys ( 9 – 5 ) v. Baltimore Ravens ( 9 – 5 )

You have to respect Dallas after beating the Giants last week. However, don’t be too quick to overrate them and pencil them into the playoffs. They beat a Giants team that did not have Jacobs and 2/5 of their offensive line (Boothe sucks by the way, thankfully Proctor made him look intelligent). The Ravens barely lost to the Steelers on a questionable call. Their defense is still one of the best in the league. Marion Barber is not going to be 100% and I doubt he’ll play the whole game. If he does, he will get hurt again. The Ravens secondary can jump routes and they have some of the best pass coverage linebackers. They should have no problem getting to Romo. They key to this game is how will the Cowboys defense do against Joe Flacco. Additionally, this is a Cowboys team that cannot protect it’s quarterback.

MY PICK: RAVENS (My gut tells me that the playoff chances for the Cowboys and the AFC runner ups are done)

Cincinnati Bengals ( 2 – 11 – 1) v. Cleveland Browns ( 4 – 10 )

What a terrible game. You have to give the Bengals credit in defeating the Redskins and ending Jim Zorn’s tenure as coach. The Browns are a mess. They are crappier than the color of their uniforms. You can’t win games with a 3rd string quarterback and an inept defense. This game is probably the most inconsequential game of them week, but I can’t trust the Browns until Bill Cowher comes to coach them.

MY PICK: BENGALS

New Orleans Saints ( 7 – 7 ) v. Detroit Lions ( 0 – 14 )

Its this simple. Pierre Thomas is good, the Lions run defense is bad. The Saints defense is terrible, but so is the Lions offense. Plus, the pattern dictates the Saints should win.

MY PICK: SAINTS

Pittsburgh Steelers ( 11 – 3 ) v. Tennessee Titans ( 12 – 2 )

If you’re looking for offense, this is not the game for you. The Steelers have this knack for finding a way to win at the last minute. The Titans will keep Rothelisberger & Parker in check for the first 55 minutes of the game. Chris Johnson will not do much against the Steeler defense and Kerry Collins will be ineffective in the passing game. If the Titans are to score against a team holding its opponents to less than 13 points in five straight games, it’ll be due to a defensive touchdown or a LenDale White run on the goal line. I’ve been saying it all season long, the Steelers are the best team in the AFC.

MY PICK: STEELERS(This will put the Colts - Steelers AFC Championship game in Pittsburgh)

Miami Dolphins ( 9 – 5 ) v. Kansas City Chiefs ( 2 – 12 )

Letting Carl Peterson go is not a good thing, especially if your name is Herman Edwards.  I’ve been swinging back and forth on this game. Everyone loves the Dolphins and what they have done this season. It’s well deserved, but as I’ve been saying all season long the Chiefs are an improving young team. They have been playing hard and have been in positions to win. This game is going to be severely affected by the weather. The temperature is expected to be 11 at game time with a wind chill of -3. This is not good for a team that has a history of poor play in cold conditions. I expect the Chiefs to utilize the home field advantages and end the Dolphins playoff chances.

MY PICK: CHIEFS

San Francisco 49ers ( 5 – 9 ) v. St. Louis Rams ( 2 – 12 )

Let’s face it, the Rams suck, especially after blowing that 16 point lead at home against Seattle. The 49ers are playing hard and have been successful at it.

MY PICK: 49ERS

Arizona Cardinals ( 8 – 6 ) v. New England Patriots ( 9 – 5 )

The Cardinals are truly the most overrated team in the NFL. They can’t play defense, they can’t run the ball. They don’t have Bill Belichick on the sideline and it’s going to be another cold, snowy day here in the Northeast (could be 7 inches on top of the 12 I just shoveled). The Patriots will, out run, out pass and out last this teams destined for a first round playoff loss.

MY PICK: PATRIOTS(expect big numbers out of Cassel, Moss and Welker)

San Diego Chargers ( 6 – 8 ) v. Tampa Bay Buccaneers ( 9 – 5 )

I’m not sure where to go on this game. The Chargers have been terribly disappointing this season, especially against lower talent. Then I found out that Jeff Garcia was supposed to start. This is reassuring. The Chargers have been unable to run for more than 4 yards a carry. The passing game has been inconsistent and the defense has fallen short of its expectation. I expect a good Buccaneer defense to correct it’s recent troubles against the run and the offense should be able to demonstrate the needed balance to win the game.

MY PICK: BUCCANEERS (I still think the South is sending three games)

New York Jets ( 9 – 5 ) v. Seattle Seahawks ( 3 – 11 )

I almost want to pick the Seahawks. The jets have been terrible on the West Coast and even worse the last few weeks. It’s Mike Holmgren’s last game in Seattle against his protege Brett Favre who is worse than the stock market these days. Let’s put it into perspective. The Seahawks needed a massive comeback against the Rams last week. Deion Branch already had his game of the year and the Jets ave too much riding on the line. This game is needed to save the Jets divisional chances and Eric Mangini’s job.

MY PICK: JETS (I’m not sure of it though)

Houston Texans ( 7 – 7 ) v. Oakland Raiders ( 3 – 11 )

Its amazing that the Raiders beat two playoff teams and almost beat another two. The Texans are the second hottest team in the league right now. The Matt Schaub – Andre Johnson connection is more productive than a GM plant and Steve Slaton is giving defenses fits. The Raiders have a good defense, but their offense cannot compensate for the many different ways the Texans can score.

MY PICK: TEXANS(Imagine what would have happened had Schaub not been injured)

Buffalo Bills ( 6 – 8 ) v. Denver Broncos ( 8 – 6 )

The Bills have found every conceivable way to lose a game this year. There is no way the Bills can beat the Broncos with a small defensive line and a banged up secondary. Expect Jay Cutler to have a monster game.

MY PICK: BRONCOS (AFC West Champions, Norv’s career is officially over)

Philadelphia Eagles ( 8 – 5 – 1 ) v. Washington Redskins ( 7 – 7 )

The Redskins come into this game losers of 4 straight. Make it 5. Clinton Portis will not be 100% and I can’t see Jason Campbell being effective against the Philadelphia blitz.  Donovan McNabb has been stellar since his benching. The only way for the Redskins to win this game is to use Ladell Betts effectively, I can’t imagine the Eagles defense having difficulty stopping the run.

MY PICK: EAGLES

Atlanta Falcons ( 9 – 5 ) v. Minnesota Vikings ( 9 – 5 )

The Vikings need this game to clinch the NFC North. Even if they win, I want Brad Childress fired. Tavaris Jackson had a decent game last week, but you can’t expect him to do it again. There was a reason he was benched in Week 2. Pat Williams is injured for the remainder of the regular season (if not, longer). Expect Michael Turner to exploit this hole in the wall. When the Falcons aren’t running the ball, you can expect Matt Ryan to throw all day against the mediocre Vikings secondary. It comes down to this, the Falcons offense against a weakened defense is better than a Viking offense that really can’t pass the ball. My only hope is that the Bears lose.

MY PICK: FALCONS

Carolina Panthers ( 11 – 3 ) v. New York Giants ( 11 – 3 )

Everyone seems to be hating on the Giants. I refuse to. This is the NFL, teams are going to lose to division rivals. In the NFC East, the only series that was swept was the Redskins – Giants series ( Giants winning both). Teams with familiarityagainst one another will likely split the games. The Giants lost games in which they were without Brandon Jacobs (he’s back this week) and 2/5 of their offensive line. A 100% healthy Giants teams does not lose both of these games. The Panthers are good, but they are a bit overrated. Jake Delhomme is a terribly overrated quarterback. The Panthers have managed to find ways to win when Delhomme has had terrible games (i.e. Oakland). Their running games is the best in the game, but the Giants defense is excellent against the run. When you take the weather, the ability of the Giants to stop the run do you really expect Delhomme to win the game?

MY PICK: GIANTS ( The road to the Super Bowl goes through NY, but the Panthers will get a bye with a Vikings loss)

Green Bay Packers ( 5 – 9 ) v. Chicago Bears ( 8 – 6 )

When will the Packers decide to play defense? Not this week. Matt Forte and Devin Hester will have very good games against a Packers team that can;t stop anybody. The only question is whether or not the Bears can stop Aaron Rodgers & Ryan Grant. A 37 – 3 defeat at home a few weeks ago tells me they can’t.

MY PICK: PACKERS (Vikings win the North).

There you go. Argue with me, I dare you.

I actually had a very good week last week. I went 12 – 4 and I made terrible picks in the Bears (I should have more faith in my Vikings) Bills and over estimated the Cardinals. Nonetheless, I now boast a record of 123 – 68 – 1.

With 14 games on Sunday, I have a lot of writing to do, so let’s get to it.

Jacksonville Jaguars ( 4 – 8 ) v. Chicago Bears ( 6 – 6 )

The ears got their asses handed to the last week at Minnesota. The offense looked inept and the defense had a hard time stopping the run. Under normal circumstances, a team dedicated to the run like Jacksonville should have the advantage. But this is the Jaguars, one of the few teams to look worse than the Bears last week. I think the Jaguars have given up on the season and the offensive line is too porous. The Bear defense should control this game against the biggest disappointment in the league. Don’t forget, this game is in Chicago and it will be cold and windy.

MY PICK: Bears

Minnesota Vikings ( 7 – 5 ) v. Detroit Lions ( 0 – 12 )

Trap game!!!! The Vikings needed a generous pass interference penalty and a last second field goal to beat the Lions 12 – 10 in Week 6. While the Vikings handily beat the Bears, it was all due to the running game and the goal-line stance in the second quarter. Take away the 99 yards TD pass to Berrian and the Vikings pass for under 150 yards. I know, I know, the Lions are terrible. Guess what? All 0-12 teams are terrible. Most people are picking the Vikings. I don’t trust them. When you look at the Week 6 game and their inept passing game, Marinelli might be desperate enough to throw 10 or 11 people in the box. I smell an upset. Seriously.

MY PICK: Lions

Houston Texans ( 5 – 7 ) v. Green Bay Packers ( 5 – 7 )

This is a tough game to pick and it’s all due to the Packers inability play defense. The Texans are better than their 5-7 record indicates. The offense looked good against and inept Jaguars defense. We know the Packers can’t stop the run, but this game is in Lambeau and it is against a southern team that doesn’t have any real experience in cold weather. I expect Mario William to get in his sacks, but look for Ryan Grant to rush for over 100 yards. Steve Slaton will rush for over 125, but I give an advantage to the Packers passing game. If Aaron Rodgers can remain upright, they should be able to throw it in the Frozen Tundra.

MY PICK: Packers

Cleveland Browns ( 4 – 8 ) v. Tennessee Titans ( 11 – 1 )

Wow!!!! Do we really need to talk about this? The Browns enter the game against an upper echelon defense with their 3rd string QB!!!!! Shouldn’t be close. Ken Dorsey will have a hard time. If the Browns win this game they will be the only team to beat the top seeds in both conferences. This is nothing more than a pipe dream. I have a better chance of winning Mega Millions.

MY PICK: Titans

Cincinnati Bengals ( 1 – 10 – 1) v. Indianapolis Colts ( 8 - 4 )

If you think the Colts will play terribly and fail to score an offensive touchdown in consecutive weeks, then you’ve been hanging out with Shaun Ellis and Ricky Williams way too long. This is just a kink on the road to the AFC Championship game against the Steelers. The Bengals have no offense without Carson Palmer and the defense has been less than stellar. Expect Peyton Manning to exploit the young secondary and throw for over 350 yards.

MY PICK: Colts

Atlanta Falcons (8 – 4 ) v. New Orleans Saints ( 6 – 6 )

I was watching Noggin with my daughter and Moose and Zee were going over patterns. It made me think of the Saints this year. WIN LOSS WIN LOSS WIN LOSS……. They lost to the Buccaneers last week. Logic dictate they will win. However, the NFL defies logic. Matt Ryan is like wine, the older he gets, the better he is. The more you play him, the better you feel. Ryan provides the Falcons with the balance that an NFL team needs. They were very impressive on the road at San Diego and learning how to win on the road pays it dividends. The Saints are too inconsistent on defense and the running game still has major questions. Let me know when Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush can start running between the tackles. He should use the Kardashian sisters as practice.

MY PICK: Falcons

Philadelphia Eagles ( 6 – 5 – 1) v. New York Giants ( 11 – 1 )

This game should be played at an NYC high school with a metal detector, just in case Plaxico decides to bring his army. Too soon? Sorry, had to get it out of my system.

In all seriousness, this is the 2nd best game of the week. The Eagles need this game to save their season. The Giants could clinch the division. The Giants have not allowed the major distraction to get to them yet. This should continue. The Eagles have been susceptible to the pass all season long. The Giants running game can get through the blitzes, which should set up Manning for a decent game with the pass. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jim Johnson (Eagles defensive coordinator)  put 7 or 8 in the box and dare Eli Manning to beat him. His strategy will be interesting. McNabb had a great game last week, but he hasn’t strung 2 in a row in a long time. Expect that trend to continue. Plaxico who?

MY PICK: Giants

New York Jets ( 8 – 4 ) v. San Francisco 49ers ( 4 – 8 )

Don’t let last week’s results affect the pick for this week. The 49ers were not impressive in their win against a Trent Edwards-less Buffalo. Their failure to take advantage of opportunities will hurt them against a team like the Jets. the Jets were given a dose of reality when they got owned by the Broncos last week. They won’t play down to their competition two weeks in a row. The content 49ers, a team that has played much harder and looked better under coach Mike Singletary, will run into a buzzsaw when the angry Jets step on the field. Brett Favre has always played well against the 49ers. I would expect the same on Sunday.

MY PICK: Jets

Kansas City Chiefs ( 2 – 10 ) v. Denver Broncos ( 7 – 5 )

I’m starting the like Kansas City, but Denver really impressed me last week. Peyton Hillis might be the answer at running back. Jay Cutler was very effective in terrible conditions last week at the Meadowlands. Even though the Chiefs beat the Broncos in Week 5, the game is in Denver and the Broncos have been playing really well as of late. Expect Cutler and Hillis to have big games.

MY PICK: Broncos

Miami Dolphins ( 7 – 5 ) v. Buffalo Bills ( 6 – 6 ) at Toronto, Canada

Why would the Bills agree to give up a home game in December to play indoors? This game doesn’t bode well for the Bills. Trent Edwards will likely miss this game leaving them with JP Losman. Losman hasn’t done anything good this season. In both games played by Losman, the Bills lost to NFC West teams and the offense put on the emergency brakes. The ravaged secondary and offensive line has been unable to their job since starting 4 – 0. The Dolphins have been winning games by playing sound football. They’ve begun to abandon the Wildcat and have played well using more traditional offenses. Expect Ronnie Brown to be effective against the shaky defensive line and Chad Pennington could thrown for over 275 yards against the inept secondary. This game being inside at the Rogers Centre doesn’t help the Bills either. It’s the perfect storm,

MY PICK: Dolphins

New England Patriots (7 – 5 ) v. Seattle Seahawks ( 2 – 10 )

Lose a rough game to the Steelers at home and get a two week vacation to the West Coast. The first game of this trip should be like taking a vacation. The Seahawks proved they are not good after last week’s blowout against the Cowboys. Matt Cassel and Randy Moss will rebound against a very questionable secondary. Expect them to have huge games. The Patriots defense will rough up Hasselbeck like a bad Expedia commercial. I can’t see any good coming out of this game. I wouldn’t ne surprised if we start hearing stores about how Jim Mora Jr. has undermined Holmgren all season.

MY PICK: Patriots( this could lead to some explosions on the Seahawk sideline)

St. Louis Rams ( 2 – 10 ) v. Arizona Cardinals ( 7 – 5 )

Think the Cardinals are glad to be playing a divisional foe? The Cardinals learned their fate the last two weeks. Win the division, lose the first round game. The Cardinals are like that 4th grade bully. They may be bigger than their peers, but upon entering the 6th grade wing they will suffer the same fate that every other team does in the division. The Rams can’t stop anyone and just like McLovin, they can’t score. Steven Jackson will be back, but the receiving corps is young, Torry Holt is no longer a part of this offense and the offensive line provides less protection than a broken condom.

MY PICK: Cardinals

Dallas Cowboys ( 8 – 4 ) v. Pittsburgh Steelers ( 9 - 3 )

I generally know who is going to these games by Wednesday. I can’t say the same for this game. I keep wavering back and forth and talking my way through this like a the contestants on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire when they don’t know the answer. The Cowboys offense is back, but I have to see them played a quality team. Wins against Washington and Seattle are not that impressive. The Steelers defense has lived up to every challenge presented them this year. Can they stop Tony Romo and Marion Barber? The Steelers offense has been effective, the Cowboys defense still has some question marks, especially against good teams (the Giants are a good example here).

When picking this game you have to look at the proven defense vs the flashy, untested offense. There is no question the Cowboys are better with Tony Romo, but I think the Steeler defense will do a good job of anticipating Barber’s runs, bumping TO in coverage while denying Romo the ability to throw it to Witten in the middle.

MY PICK: Steelers

Washington Redskins ( 7 – 5 ) v. Baltimore Ravens ( 8 – 4 )

This will be an interesting game, but the end result will leave people to ask “What’s happened to the Redskins?” They enter this game on a 2-game losing streak against very good teams. Make it 3-games. The Ravens defense will win this game for two reasons. First, Clinton Portis is questionable and the Ravens are generally good against the run. If Portis rushes for more than 50 yards, I will be surprised. Second, the secondary will have at least two interceptions. It’s a safe bet that one of them will be a pick-six. Expect Joe Flacco to have a respectable game.

MY PICK: Ravens

Tampa Bay Buccaneers ( 9 – 3 ) v. Carolina Panthers ( 9 – 3 )

The winner of this game will win the NFC South. The Panthers have done a very good job in running the ball lately but the passing game is suspect. Is there something wrong with Jake DelHomme? It is possible that his arm is tired after recently coming back from Tommy John surgery. The full recovery window is over a year. The Bucs defense has quietly done the job by taking away the teams strengths. While the Panthers are balanced, the strength is the running game and Gruden should find a way to stop the big run. The Tampa Bay offense should find a way to pick at the Panthers defense. While this is a good game, the Panthers are overrated. They haven’t won in impressive fashion and there are times where they just look bad, particularlyagainst teams with good defenses.

MY PICK: Buccaneers

Those are the Week 14 picks. If you want to win this week, go with mine. The streak of 10+ wins should continue.

Big 12 South Debacle November 30, 2008

With Oklahoma opening up a can of whoop-ass on Texas Tech and Oklahoma State in consecutive last night the Big 12 standings now look like this.

Oklahoma 11-1 (7-1)

Texas        11-1 (7-1)

Texas Tech 11-1 (6-1)

That leaves with the question of who plays Missouri in the Big 12 Title game?

First, let me state the it should be Texas against Oklahoma in the Big 12 Champioship game. Missouri has no chance against either of these teams. But I digress.

By rule, the BCS standings would determine the winner of the South division. If there were to happen the following logic would have to dictate why the Big 12 BCS spots MUST look like this:

Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech.

Oklahoma beat Texas Tech by a landslide. Texas Tech beat Texas by the slimmest of margins. Both of these wins were at home. More importantly, Texas comfortably beat Oklahoma in a rivalry game on a neutral field. I understand that Oklahoma comfortably beat Oklahoma State on the road last night, but beating Oklahoma on a neutral field is more impressive than beating Oklahoma State on the road.

Logic dictate that the voters would have to give Texas the edge of Oklahoma.

If the sports writers and coaches follow simple logic, Texas should be playing Missouri in the Big 12 title game. Texas should win and go to the national title game against the SEC Champion.

I did not do so well in my selections last week. My bad case of overestimitis and underestimitosis led me to a mediocre 9 – 7, bringing my season record to 111 - 64 – 1, not bad for a bowling league.

My thanksgiving games were brought to you my the singer Meat Loaf. I won’t be sad cause two out of three ain’t bad.

I have awoken from my tryptophan induced coma to bring you this weeks picks. So, here we go:

San Francisco 49ers ( 3 – 8 ) v. Buffalo Bills ( 6 – 5 )

The Bills looked impressive in steamrolling the Chiefs last week. Trent Edwards finally looked like the quarterback he should be. The 49ers are going to cold, frigid, windy Buffalo for a 1pm game. West Coast teams still have yet to win an afternoon game on the East Coast. The streak should continue. Face it, the 49ers just aren’t that good.

MY PICK: Bills

Baltimore Ravens ( 7 – 4 ) v. Cincinnati Bengals ( 1 – 9 )

Does anyone really expect the Bengals to have any success against the Ravens defense. We saw what happened when they played the Steelers last week. The Ravens defense did bad things to the Eagles and they have this ability to wear teams down to create huge 4th quarters. I would expect Joe Flacco to have a big game and Cincy should be finished off quite early.

MY PICK: Ravens

Indianapolis Colts ( 7 – 4 ) v. Cleveland Browns ( 4 – 7 )

Brady Quinn is out for the season. Enter Derek Anderson, a quarterback who has completed more passes to the other team than his own. You can’t win completing less than 50% of your passes, especially against the Colts. Indy squeezed out a close win last week against the Chargers. They have won 4 straight, 3 of which were against the most highly regarded teams in the AFC. The Browns are hurting and the Colts are putting themselves in a good position to make a serious Super Bowl run.

MY PICK: Colts

Carolina Panthers ( 8 – 3 ) v. Green Bay Packers ( 5 – 6 )

Generally, a December game at Lambeau means a guaranteed Packers victory. But this is 2008 and the Packers are not the Packers. They can’t stop the run. Carolina runs the ball very well. They can’t stop the pass. The Panthers can throw the ball too. Ryan Grant does well in cold weather and Aaron Rodgers hasn’t been all that bad, but the Panthers defense is legit. Combine all that with the run of poor defense the Pack has been playing as of late and the other odd home losses at Lambeau this year, it should add up to a Panther victory.

MY PICK: Panthers

Miami Dolphins ( 6 – 5 ) v. St. Louis Rams ( 2 – 9 )

After seeing Miami’s offense hold its own against the Patriots last week I am more than confident they destroy the Rams. The Dolphins have been improving this week while the Rams keep getting worse and worse. They can’t score and they can’t stop anyone. The offensive line is decimated and Bulger will be eating more turf than your neighborhood cow. Expect Reggie Brown & Ricky Williams to have big games. This game should be over real early.

MY PICK: Dolphins

New Orleans Saints ( 6 – 5 ) v. Tampa Bay Buccaneers ( 8 – 3 )

The Saints looked very impressive against the Packers last Monday night. More importantly, Reggie Bush returns from his injury. The Buccaneers are quietly becoming one of the best teams in the NFC. The offense under Garcia’s leadership does not turn the ball over and the defense usually seals the deal. They came back from 17-0 down in the first quarter to defeat the Lions easily. When they need to get the job done, they usually do. This game will hinge on how much of a factor Reggie Bush is.

MY PICK: Buccaneers

New York Giants ( 10 – 1 ) v. Washington Redskins ( 7 – 4 )

It’s funny how after taking a small break Friday night, I wake up to hear that Plaxico Burress accidentally shot himself in the thigh and will likely miss the rest of the season. The Giants haven’t missed him in many games this year, but those were against inferior teams. The Redskins are much better than Arizona. They may have lost the first game 17-6, but they did hold the Giants scoreless in the second half. This game is at home but it’s still the Giants. The differences between the Redskins wins and losses are the turnovers. When they don’t turn the ball over, they win, when they do, they lose. Even if the Giants turn it over once or twice, they have the offensive firepower to score quickly. The Redskins do not. They are too deliberate and don’t have the ability to blow teams out like Seattle. I think the Giant defense will cause Campbell to turn the ball over a few times and that will be the difference between a win and a loss.

MY PICK: Giants

Atlanta Falcons ( 7 – 4 ) v. San Diego Chargers ( 4 – 7 )

The Chargersstink. Something is wrong with LaDanian Tomlinson and I don’t thin it’s age. Philip Rivers and the wide receivers can’t seem to get on the same pages and the Chargers don’t pressure the quarterback as much as they used. Their run defense is also suspect. I think Matt Ryan will have a mediocre game, but Michael Turner should rush for over 125 yards. This will be one of the closer games this week, but I don’t trust San Diego, even though they can still win their division.

MY PICK: Falcons

Denver Broncos ( 6 – 5 ) v. New York Jets ( 8 – 3 )

The Broncos and Jets have something in common. They both lost to Oakland. The similarities basically stop there. The Jets are one of the most improved games this season. Kris Jenkins is my new pick for MVP and teams cannot run on the Jets anymore. Didn’t matter anyway, Denver still can’t find a running back that can stay healthy this season. The Jets can run the ball with Leon Washington & Thomas Jones. The Broncos can’t stop the run. The Jets have Brett Favre, the Broncos can’t  pressure the quarterback with their diminutive defensive line. The Jets can pressure the quarterback. Expect Cutler and Brandon Marshall to have tough games, especially with Abram Elam and Ty Law being turnover monsters in the secondary. The Jets can win this game by using the run and not having to rely on Brett Favre. They are a much better team, as long as they don’t get complacent and play down to their competition, a typical Jet characteristic.

MY PICK: Jets (my daughter will be happy)

Kansas City Chiefs ( 1 – 10 ) v. Oakland Raiders ( 3 – 8 )

Give the Raiders credit, they beat the hell out of the Broncos.  Give the Bills credit, they beat the hell out of the Chiefs. Guess what? I don’t care. I still don’t have faith in the Raiders and I still like the Chiefs. But let’s look at this from a reasonable perspective. The Raider offense has been inconsistent. They did beat the Chiefs when most of the players were playing their second game in the league and Damon Huard was the starter. Tyler Thigpen has done well this season and he wasn’t all that terrible against the Bills. If he can keep the turnovers down they should be able to win. As I said, I’m not fully sold on the Raiders and I think the Chiefs are a better team, if they can avoid the turnover.

MY PICK: Chiefs

Pittsburgh Steelers ( 8 – 3 ) v. New England Patriots ( 7 – 4 )

This should be a good game. While the Patriots have been improving with Matt Cassel under center, he will not throw for 400 yards against the best defense in the league. The Patriots running game is still suspect and the Steelers are not going to give Moss the room he has enjoyed recently. This is also a defense that does not give up yardage in the middle, so don’t be surprised if Wes Welker is held under 75 yards receiving.

MY PICK: Steelers

Chicago Bears ( 6 – 5 ) v. Minnesota Vikings ( 6 – 5 )

This is an odd game for NBC to flex into. Both teams are inconsistent and to be honest, not that good. The Bears defense played really well against Aaron Rodgers and the Packers, which have a far better passing attack than Gus Frerotte and the Vikings. Last time they played it was a 48-41 game with the Bears scoring 14 points on defensive and special teams touchdowns. Don’t forget the other 10 points they score off Gus Frerotte interceptions. The Bears offense has been inconsistent and will have trouble running against the Viking D-line, but the passing attack combined with terrible Viking quarterback play should put the Bears in the division lead.

MY PICK: Bears.

Jacksonville Jaguars ( 4 – 7 ) v. Houston Texans ( 4 – 7 )

This should have been a good Monday night game, but both teams are terrible. If the Jaguars can hold on to the ball they should be able to win. There are three keys to this game. First, can Jacksonville hold on to the ball? Second, can the Jaguars stop Steve Slaton and the running attack? Finally, can they keep Mario Williams off of David Garrard? If they can, then they should win. However, I don’t foreseeit, but with Jacksonville you never know.

MY PICK: Texans

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I hope your turkey is more enjoyable than the games the NFL has selected for you tomorrow. In my 29 years on Earth I have neover been less excited about Thanksgiving football.

Anyway, here are the picks for this year’s edition of Thanksgiving Football:

Tennessee Titans (10 – 1) v. Detroit Lions (0 – 11)

Ironically enough, this is not the first time the Lions will be winless on Thanksgiving. It won’t probably be the last. But i digress. The Titans are pissed after being owned by the Jets last week. The Lion offense looked better as of late but the defense is in shambles. Expect LenDale White and Chris Johnson to have big games. The Titan defense should score. Finally a game where Kerry Collins doesn’t have to win it and you can go back to overrating the Titans, the third best team in the AFC.

MY PICK: Titans

Seattle Seahawks (2 – 9) v. Dallas Cowboys (7 – 4)

While Seattle kept the Redskins close last week, they are facing a more potent offensive on the road. The Cowboys are just plain better. Tony Romo is back, the offense is clicking and is close to getting their rhythm back. They need this game and they know they need to get to 8-4 before they enter the tough stretch of the schedule. Expect a blowout.

MY PICK: Cowboys

Arizona Cardinals (7 – 4) v. Philadelphia Eagles (5 – 5 – 1)

Arizona is the trendy pick and the focus will be on McNabb’s benching. I think we’ve seen that he should be the QB for the season. I think this whole soap opera, combined with a short week is a recipe for disaster for a team that just isn’t that good. Westbrook is still hurting, the receiver can’t run route and Andy Reid’s decision have been more dangerous than his sons. The Cardinals have a potent passing game. Go against a poor pass defense and the pick is easy.

MY PICK: Cardinals

There you go. Try to enjoy the games, they’ll be over soon.

To the Eagles Fans:

You wanted Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb to leave town. You’ve made them more unpopular that the current President. You got tired of seeing the Eagles flounder game after game and loss and tie after loss. You wanted this to be Donovan McNabb’s last season.

Well, you got what you wished for. Kevin Kolb, the former Houston Cougar. McNabb was 8-18 for 59 yards. Kolb was 10-23 for 73 yards with 2 INTs, one of which was returned for a TD because David Akers is a better tackler than Kolb. If I recall, he was ineffective as his fellow NFL alumni (David Klingler & Andre Ware), and they broke NCAA records.

You wanted to see someone other than #5 (whose number will be retired in a few years) behind center. You don’t need that quarterback taking you to four straight NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl. Anyone can throw to those talented receivers. A different quarterback could make Brian Westbrook healthy again.

For the first time in four years, Andy Reid gave you what you wanted. Just remember the old Joni Mitchell song “Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you got til it’s gone, they paved paradise and put up a parking lot.”

If McNabb were a Viking, he’d be a division leader at 8-3 and you’d really be sorry.

Now that you’ve seen a glimpse into the ghost of Eagles future, shut up!!!! You should be satisfied with one championship this year. Everything else is just gravy.

PS: I will officially add Andy Reid on my list of coaches to be fired for benching McNabb and giving you what you want.

Big 12 BCS Breakdown November 23, 2008

With Oklahoma opening up a can of whoop-ass on Texas Tech last night the Big 12 standings look like this with one game left to play.

Oklahoma 10-1 (6-1) v. Oklahoma State

Texas        10-1 (6-1) v. Texas A & M

Texas Tech 10-1 (6-1) v. Baylor

It’s safe to assume that all three teams will win the final game on the regular season. That leaves with the question of who plays Missouri in the Big 12 Title game?

By rule, the BCS standings would determine the winner of the South division. If there were to happen the following logic would have to dictate why the Big 12 BCS spots should look like this:

Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech.

Oklahoma beat Texas Tech by a landslide. Texas Tech beat Texas by the slimmest of margins. Both of these wins were at home. More importantly, Texas comfortably beat Oklahoma in a rivalry game on a neutral field.

This would have to give Texas the edge of Oklahoma. The only way Texas Tech can get into the Big 12 Championship game is if Oklahoma loses to Oklahoma State in Stillwater Saturday.

If the sports writers and coaches follow simple logic, Texas should be playing Missouri in the Big 12 title game. Texas should win and go to the national title game against the SEC Champion.

Last week wasn’t as terrible as I thought it would be. A tie game can really throw a wrinkle in your picks, but the damages was minimal. Last week I went 10 – 5 – 1, bringing the season record to a robust 102 – 57 - 1.

For the first time this season, I picked the Thursday night game correctly and I get to start off the week with a chance for that perfect week.

Let’s get it started, I have company coming for the daughter’s 3rd birthday party and it’s now or never. Family members are tough to ignore, no matter how hard you try.

Carolina Panthers (8 – 2) v. Atlanta Falcons (6 – 4)

This is a tough game to pick. The Panthers have been unimpressive in their wins against inferior Oakland & Detroit. Matt Ryan is a better quarterback at home. I know the Falcons are favored at home against a team that beat them 24-9 earlier in the season. Matt Ryan is steadily improving, but the Panther defense has been a constant all season. It’s their offense I’m worried about. I can’t imagine this team underperforming three weeks in a row. 8-2 teams don’t do that. I like the Panther front seven against Michael Turner and the Falcon offensive line. I think Delhomme finds an answer against the Falcons secondary.

MY PICK: Panthers.

Houston Texans (3 – 7) v. Cleveland Browns (4 – 6)

Brady Quinn is turning out to be a decent quarterback in his first two starts. He has yet to make the critical mistake. The Browns defense is a different story. How do you let Buffalo stay in a game they had no business being in? You can’t intercept a QB 3 times and let the game come down to a missed field goal. Houston is the tough luck team in the NFL. Sage Rosenfelsis killing them. The game is in Cleveland and the weather might play a factor. I think Steve Slaton will have a good game, but I expect the same out of Brady Quinn and the receiving corps.

MY PICK: Browns

San Francisco 49ers (3 – 7) v. Dallas Cowboys (6 – 4)

This is a good game for Tony Romo to get some good practice and to get back into rhythm. He wasn’t totally impressive in their win against the Redskins last week. The 49ers secondary is overpaid and has yet to live up to its expectations. TO would like nothing better than to stick to the team that first drafted him. Frank Gore is not 100 percent, the QB situation is a mess and the Cowboys need the win more. Don’t forget, this is a West Coast team going East for a 1pm game. No team has won in this situation yet and the Cowboys are not divisional rivals, meaning they are just a better team.

MY PICK: Cowboys

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7 – 3) v. Detroit Lions (0 – 10)

The Lions are so bad, the game is being blacked out in Detroit. Why am I even bothering to discuss this game? The Bucs still don’t impress me at 7-3. They did do a nice job running against the Vikings and keeping Adrian Peterson under 100 yards. If they can do bad things to the Viking offense, they should be able to do the same to the Lions offense even though Daunte Culpepper has added a spark to that offense.

MY PICK: Buccaneers

New York Jets (7 – 3) v. Tennessee Titans (10 – 0)

Two weeks ago I did not think this would be a game. While everyone else, including my three year old daughter (a die hard JETS fan, she loves teams with chants), is ready to jump on the Jets bandwagon, I am not. I think this will be a close game. Statistically, the Jets are a better team in all aspects (run & pass defense, run & pass offense), but Brett Favre is the reason the Jets are 7-3 and not 10-0. He is prone to making that critical mistake at the wrong time. He hasn’t done so in a while, which means he’s overdue. This will be a very close game. The Jets will cover the spread. I expect both teams to have difficulty in running the ball forcing the quarterback to win the game. For that reason, I expect Favre to make a huge mistake and the Titans to stay undefeated for at least two more weeks (they play the Lions on Thanksgiving).

MY PICK: Titans

Buffalo Bills (5 – 5) v. Kansas City Chiefs (1 – 9)

This week’s Bills song is Landslide by Fleetwood Mac. Losers of 4 straight they have been a mess. The lines can’t move anyone off the ball. Teams have figured out how to play Marshawn Lynch and Lee Evans. The Bills have more turnovers than your local bakery. The Chiefs on the other hand continue to improve. Larry Johnson had a decent game and has accepted his role in the spread offense. Tyler Thigpen continues to impress me in his development. The Bills secondary is hurting, the game is in Kansas City and this matchup bodes well for the Chiefs.

MY PICK: Chiefs

Chicago Bears (5 – 5) v. St. Louis Rams ( 2 – 8 )

Wow, were the Bears unimpressive last week or what? Good thing the Rams really suck. Even better thing that Steven Jackson is hurt. The Bear defense can’t seem to stop anybody as of late. Lovie Smith is close to making my list of coaches that should be fired. While I don’t trust the Bears, keep in mind they are playing the Rams. My only hope is Torry Holt has a good game, he’s overdue and deserving.

MY PICK: Bears.

New England Patriots (6 – 4) v. Miami Dolphins (6 – 4)

The 3rd place Patriots have had 10 days to prepare for the 2nd place Dolphins and their gimmick Wildcat offense. Why teams are starting to adopt some versions of it is beyond me. Anyway, the Patriots are starting to show some vulnerability with their injuries. The Dolphins are hot, winning four straight and five of their last six. I think the Patriots are the better team though. Belichick has done a very good job coaching this team and with extra days to prepare, they have an edge. Don’t expect the Wildcat to get them again.

MY PICK: Patriots

Minnesota Vikings (5 – 5) v. Jacksonville Jaguars (4 – 6)

Conventional wisdom say the Vikings should win this game. The only problem with that thought is the Viking don’t do anything conventionally. The run defense played uninspired against Tampa Bay. The Jaguars have played much better since losing to Cincinnati. Offensive balance has been much better and the defense is starting show signs of life. This is especially important against the inept Vikings passing game. This game is in Florida and the Jaguars are a team that is still over reliant on the run and will look to control the clock. If they keep the Williams on the field for their trademark 14-play, 9-minute drives, the Vikings run defense will wear down in the heat and the Jags will play Jags football. Expect Adrian Peterson to see 7 and 8 men in the box all game. There is no reason to respect Gus Frerotte and the pass game.

MY PICK: Jaguars

Philadelphia Eagles (5 – 4 – 1) v. Baltimore Ravens ( 6 – 4)

Now that Donovan McNabb knows that games can end in ties (Sorry, I couldn’t resist the dig), I expect a more inspired effort when the clock gets closer to :00. But let’s be serious, they’re playing the Ravens. The Eagles jsut aren’t that good. The Raven defense should have no problem in doing what I think are the three keys to the game. First, pressure McNabb andforce the quick throw. Second, contain Westbrook. Three, createturnovers. The Eagles can be beaten by the pass and Joe Flacco should be able to do it if the Eagle blitz can be picked up.

MY PICK: Ravens

Oakland Raiders ( 2 – 8 ) v. Denver Broncos (6 – 4)

Denver has looked impressive in the 4thquart comebacks over Cleveland and Atlanta, two decent teams. The Raiders are not a decent team, regardless of Darren McFadden’s return. The Devner running game will still have it’s struggles, but Denver should be able to beat the Oakland secondary and the inept Raiders offense.

MY PICK: Broncos

New York Giants (9 – 1)  v. Arizona Cardinals (7 – 3)

I’ve been saying it all year, the Giants are the best team in football. The Cardinals are not as good as their record indicates. This will prove it. The Giants should be able to control the ball and clock with their massive running game. Brandon Jacobs is questionable, but Ahmad Bradshaw and Derrick Ward are more than capable of running for 100 yards. Plaxico Burress is questionable, but Eli Manning has the ability to find Amani Toomer and the emerging Steve Smith. The Giant defense will stop Tim Higtower and Edgerrin James. They will also pressure Kurt Warner into some questionable throws. When Warner does not have time to throw the ball, he does not put up the MVP like numbers like he has been doing all season. Giants will win and cover the spread. Didn’t Eli win in this stadium last year?

MY PICK: Giants

Washington Redskins (6 – 4) v. Seattle Seahawks ( 2 – 8 )

Good thing the Redskins are playing the Seahawks because they haven’t looked good the last three weeks. the Redskins have an inability to put teams away while losing their last two games at home. The Seahawks are injury prone and they can’t seem to stop anybody. Expect Clinton Portis to have a big game and Jason Campbell should do an adequate job against the porous pass defense. The game will be close though.

MY PICK: Redskins

Indianapolis Colts (6 – 4) v. San Diego Chargers (4 – 6)

TRAP GAME!!!!! The Chagers are at home andon national television. They are 2 – 0 with huge wins in this situation but this is a bad time to get the Colts. The Colts are hot, winning three straight againstgood teams that traditionally give them trouble. Peyton Manning’s timing with the receivers, especially Marvin Harrison is getting much better. Joseph Addai is playing like the capable running back he is. The Chargers can’t do anything right. Lose to Pittsburgh without giving up a touchdown. Fail to move the ball, fail to stop teams you should beat. The Chargers are like a trophy wife. Looking good but unreliable and unfaithful. The Colts are poised to make a Super Bowl run.

MY PICK: Colts

Green Bay Packers (5 – 5) v. New Orleans Saints (5 – 5)

This is a tough game to pick. The Packers were very impressive in defeating the Bears. Ryan Grant looks like he’s a better late season running back. The Saints have a good passing game, but Brees isn’t getting the ball in the endzone due to a lack of first-class receivers. The running game is mediocre at best. While the Packer secondary is banged up andhave had trouble with passing teams. I think the Packer running game is going to help them get back on the right track and if the defense can keep Brees in check, meaning lots of yards but no touchdowns, the Packers could win.

MY PICK: Packers

There are my picks for this week. Let’s hear your disagreements.

It’s my daughter’s 3rd birthday today and I have to post this real quick. Thankfully, there isn’t much of a game to analyze. Of course I dno’t know if I’d trsut my pick since I haven’t gotten a Thursday night game right yet.

Cincinnati Bengals (1-8-1) v. Pittsburgh Steelers (7-3)

Cincy is coming off the moral victory last week against the Eagles, but they weren’t the same Eagles that beat Pittsburgh earlier in the season. I expect the Steelers to cause a lot of turnovers and a lot of havoc for Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Bengal offense.

MY PICK: Steelers (although two ties would be cool)

MY DAUGHTER’S PICK: Bengals (she thinks Tigers are cute, she hasn’t seen Ocho Cinco)

A Letter From Jim Fassel to Al Davis November 16, 2008

Rumor has it that former Giants coach Jim Fassel sent a letter to Al Davis expressing his interest in coaching the Raiders. I bet the letter went something like this:

Dear Mr. Davis:

My name is Jim Fassel and I am very interested in being the next coach of the Oakland Raiders. The following are reason why I feel I would make a good coach for you.

First, I am a tool. I will have press conference in which I’ll put all my chips on the table and give the Oakland Raiders that soundbytes and attention they truly deserve. When you speak, not only will I listen. I will obey. I am so desperate to coach against, I’ll personally change your Depends and clean your bedpan whenever you want. That even includes halftime or during the 2-minute drill.

Second, I have playoff experience….sort of. I’ve been there, but I’ll never take your team there in consecutive years. This is good, because you’ll know when you can book your trips to Boca Raton, the Evel Knievel museum or get your custom made Hanes Sweatsuits refitted.

Third, I own a BeDazzeler. Imagine how sharp your trademark blacksweat suits would look with the Rhinestones. It would be Liberace meeting The Cryptkeeper. Classic. It would also take the focus off your liver sport.

Fourth, if you called my sideline and told me to go deep, I’d send Robert Gallery as well. It might be a 10 yard penalty, but it’ll throw the defense. We can call it Wild Al formation. If Joe Paterno can coach from the sidelines, so can we. Oops, I mean you.

Fifth, I consulted with Brian Billick last year. He’s just an offensive genius, you’re the total genius. No one knows football like you. You’ve always had an eye for talent, Shanahan, Gruden, Callahan, Kiffin. If they listened to you sir, they’d be successful.

Please sir, give this opportunity to be the next tool of the Oakland Raiders. I am desperate. I can’t pay the bills and need the money bad. Plus, I’m just mentally retarded enough to take this job and be your second fiddle.

Love, Jim Fassel

e-mail: jimfassel@moron.com (If you don’t know how to use e-mail, call me at 3:30, I’ll show you).

You know what is sad about this whole thing? Jim Fassel is a good guy and deserve a better coaching job than this.
